& Northern Oregon

August , 2001

We drove down towards Fort Canby State Park, where Lewis and Clark ended their exploration to the coast.

Long Beach

First, we visited Long Beach and saw the last day of the annual Kite Festival.

Then we drove into Fort Canby and visited the two lighthouses, North Head and Cape Disappointment, as well as the Lewis and Clark Interpretative Center.

Fort Stevens State Park

We stayed across the Columbia River in Fort Stevens State Park in a yurt (Mongolian tent). Banana slugs are very large and are prevalent in this area.

Fort Clatsop

This site celebrates the 1805-06 winter encampment of the 33-member Lewis and Clark Expedition. A 1955 community-built replica of the explorers' 50'x50' Fort Clatsop is the focus of this 125-acre park. The fort, historic canoe landing, and spring are nestled in the coastal forests and wetlands of the Coast Range as it merges with the Columbia River Estuary.
