Olympic Peninsula

August 23, 2001

We took the ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island, then drove through Poulsboro (Washington's Scandinavian town) - but it was raining so, no pictures. Then we drove to Sequim (pronounced "skwim"), saw some u-pick lavender fields and drove to a nice viewing area of the Dungeness Spit.

We then drove over to Port Angeles and checked into the Tudor Inn, the B&B we would be staying in for the next two nights.

Friday found us with a slightly overcast sky, but no rain. We drove up to Hurricane Ridge, the only road into the Olympic Mountains. It was very curvy and the views towards Port Angeles and Victoria probably would have been incredible if not for the clouds.

We spent the afternoon in the Crescent Lake area, which included hiking to Marymere Falls, seeing our first banana slug, viewing the remarkable blue of the glacier carved Lake Crescent, and hiking along the Pyramid Mountain side of the lake.

Saturday found us on our way South. First, we went to Soleduck Falls. Then we drove towards the coast where Eric got to see the Pacific Ocean for the first time at Ruby Beach. Then through one of the local Indian Reservations towards the Quinalt Rain Forest. From there we went to Ocean Beach.  The neat thing about lots of beaches in Washington state is that you can drive your car on them. We went out to the beach (about 4 blocks from our hotel) and watched the sun set.

Sunday found us heading further South towards Fort Canby and the Columbia River...
